Winter in the Lost Rivers
Snowmobiling is a fun and exciting sport that enables people of all ages to enjoy the outdoors in the winter. Explore the high country of Antelope Creek, where you can tour Fish Creek, Iron Bog, Lead Belt, Dry Fork and the Antelope Guard Station or travel northwest of Mackay, to Copper Basin, North Fork and Park Creek for excellent snowmobiling. These areas have un-groomed wide-open spaces with steep inclines for highmarking. Choose our preference! Remember the Boy Scout Motto: “Be Prepared”
Check with the local Ranger Station for maps of the Challis and Salmon National Forest. For more information, call 208-588-2224.
Ice Fishing on Mackay Reservoir is a great way to spend any winter day in the Lost River Valley. During the winter months the reservoir freezes over allowing shelters to be placed on the ice. Fishermen spend hours on the ice fishing for trout and telling stories about the big one that got away.
Don’t forget the approximately 11 miles of groomed cross country ski trails or snowshoeing at Craters of the Moon. For more info 208-527-1300 or www.nps.gov/crmo.
