Craters of the Moon

This first national monument in Idaho was established to protect some of the unusual landscape of the Craters of the Moon Lava Field. This “lunar” landscape was thought to resemble that of the moon and was described in the proclamation as a “weird and scenic landscape peculiar to itself.”

The Monuments unearthly lava landscape attracts nearly a quarter million visitors each year. The monument offers a variety of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in an one-of-a-kind setting. The Monument provides guided activities and programs in summer and cross country skiing and snow shoeing in the winter. The Monument is the perfect place for seeing wildflowers, bird watching, photography, biking, hiking, camping, or just finding a bit of solitude.
